Short answer: E-commerce SEO is the work of getting your category and product pages found in Google for the searches that lead to purchases. For Indian online stores, the biggest wins usually come from fixing crawl and duplicate-URL problems caused by filters and variants, writing category pages that match how people search, adding product structured data, and sharing your catalogue with Google through Merchant Center.

From April 2023 to September 2024 I worked in-house as a digital marketing executive for a D2C nutrition brand. Over twelve months, a mix of technical fixes, content optimisation and targeted link acquisition took the store to between 4,000 and 5,000 keywords on Google’s first page. The full story is in our SEO case study. This guide is the practical version: what to fix, in what order, for an Indian store on Shopify, WooCommerce or a custom platform.

1. Get the crawl and index under control

Online stores generate URLs faster than any other kind of site. Filters, sort orders, colour and size variants, tracking parameters and internal search can produce thousands of near-duplicate pages. Google’s e-commerce documentation specifically calls out URL structure, pagination and faceted navigation as areas that affect how well your catalogue is crawled.

  • Decide which filter combinations deserve their own indexable page (for example “whey protein 2kg”) and which should not be crawled or indexed.
  • Use canonical tags so variant and parameter URLs point to the main version.
  • Keep internal search results out of the index.
  • Make sure paginated category pages link to each other with normal, crawlable links.
  • Check Google Search Console’s page indexing report for “Duplicate without user-selected canonical” and “Crawled, currently not indexed”.

Our technical SEO audit checklist walks through these checks layer by layer.

2. Build category pages around real searches

For most stores, category pages drive more organic revenue than product pages, because they match broader purchase-intent searches. Research how your customers actually phrase their searches, including Hindi-English mixes, and map each important phrase to one category or collection page.

  • Write a short, useful introduction above or below the product grid explaining how to choose within the category.
  • Add a few genuine FAQs that buyers ask, such as sizing, usage or delivery.
  • Link to related categories and buying guides.
  • Avoid creating several categories that target the same search; that splits your ranking signals.

3. Make product pages worth ranking

  • Unique descriptions. Manufacturer copy used by every other seller gives Google no reason to prefer your page.
  • Real photos and, where useful, video. Include descriptive file names and alt text.
  • Specifications in text, not only inside images.
  • Genuine reviews. Google’s guidance encourages helpful, detailed reviews; never add fake ones.
  • Clear price, availability, delivery and returns information.

For discontinued products, keep the page live with alternatives if it has links or traffic, or redirect it to the closest relevant category.

4. Add structured data and use Merchant Center

Product structured data helps Google understand price, availability and reviews, and makes pages eligible for richer results. Most modern e-commerce platforms and SEO plugins add basic Product markup; check it with Google’s Rich Results Test and fix missing fields.

Separately, submitting your product feed to Google Merchant Center makes products eligible for free listings on Google Shopping surfaces, as well as for Shopping ads. Keep feed data identical to what is on the page.

5. Speed matters more on mobile commerce

Product and category pages are heavy: many images, review widgets, chat tools and tracking scripts. Aim to pass Core Web Vitals, compress and properly size product images, lazy-load images below the fold and remove apps or plugins you no longer use.

6. Content that supports buying decisions

Buying guides and comparison articles attract people earlier in the journey and link them to the right category. Write them only where you have genuine expertise, and link each one to the relevant collection. For a nutrition brand, that might be “how to choose a protein powder”; for a furniture store, “how to measure for a sofa”.

Shopify, WooCommerce or custom?

All three can rank well. Shopify handles hosting and security but has some fixed URL structures. WooCommerce gives more control but needs maintenance. Custom platforms offer freedom but make SEO basics your developer’s responsibility. Our WordPress vs custom website guide covers the trade-offs.

SEO and paid ads work better together

Shopping and Performance Max campaigns show which products and searches convert, which tells you where SEO effort will pay back. Organic rankings then reduce how much you need to spend on those same searches. See what a performance marketing agency does and Google Ads cost in India.

Grow your store’s organic revenue

Our SEO services for online stores start with a technical crawl of your catalogue, a keyword-to-category map and a prioritised fix list. Request a free e-commerce SEO audit and we will show you where your store is losing visibility.

Frequently asked questions

How long does e-commerce SEO take to show results?

Technical fixes can show results within weeks once pages are recrawled. Category and content improvements usually take a few months to build momentum.

Should product variants have separate URLs?

Only if people search for the variant specifically and the page offers something distinct. Otherwise, keep variants on one URL or canonicalise them to the main product.

Do I need a blog for an online store?

Not always. Buying guides that answer real pre-purchase questions and link to categories are useful; generic blog posts are not.

Is Shopify good for SEO in India?

Yes, Shopify stores can rank well. Pay attention to duplicate collection-product URLs, app bloat affecting speed, and writing unique category content.

What is Google Merchant Center used for?

It lets you submit your product feed to Google, making products eligible for free listings and Shopping ads.
