What SEO actually involves
SEO gets sold as a mystery. It is not one. It is four separate jobs that happen to share a name, and knowing which one your business actually needs is most of the battle.
The four jobs
Technical SEO is making sure Google can crawl, render and index your pages at all. Broken canonicals, pages blocked in robots.txt, a sitemap full of dead URLs, a site that takes nine seconds to load on a phone. None of this is glamorous and all of it is load-bearing. A site with technical problems cannot be fixed with more content.
On-page SEO is matching each page to a real search query and then answering that query properly. One page, one job. Most sites fail here by having five pages half-targeting the same phrase, which splits the signal and ranks none of them.
Off-page SEO is other sites referencing yours. Links still matter, but the ones that count are the ones you would want even if Google did not exist: your local business directories, industry associations, suppliers, press. Bought links from link farms are a liability now, not a shortcut.
Local SEO is a different game entirely. It runs on your Google Business Profile, your reviews, and whether your name, address and phone number are identical everywhere they appear online. If your customers are within driving distance, this is where your budget should go first.
What the first six months look like
| Period | Focus | What you should see |
|---|---|---|
| Month 1 | Audit, technical fixes, keyword and intent mapping | Errors cleared, pages indexed, no ranking change yet |
| Months 2–3 | On-page rewrites, internal linking, first content | Long-tail keywords entering the top 50, impressions climbing |
| Months 4–6 | Content depth, links, local signals | First page-one rankings on lower-competition terms, enquiries starting |
| Month 6+ | Competitive terms, authority building | Compounding traffic; this is where SEO starts to outperform ads on cost |
If someone promises page one in thirty days for a competitive keyword, they are either targeting a phrase nobody searches for, or they are about to do something that gets your site penalised.
What SEO cannot do
- It cannot fix a business nobody wants. Traffic to an offer that does not convert is just a bigger bill.
- It cannot outrank a national brand on a head term in six months on a small budget. It can absolutely beat them on the specific, high-intent phrases they ignore.
- It cannot work if you will not change the website. Most of on-page SEO is changing the website.
- It cannot survive being switched off. Rankings decay when the work stops, though far slower than ads, which stop the same day.
How to judge an SEO agency, including this one
Four questions worth asking anyone who pitches you:
- What will you actually do in month one? A real answer is specific and slightly boring. A vague one means there is no plan.
- Which keywords, and what is the search volume and difficulty? If they will not show you the numbers, they picked easy words to look good in reports.
- Do I own the accounts? Your Search Console, analytics and Google Business Profile should be in your name, not the agency's. This is the single most common way agencies hold clients hostage.
- What happens if it does not work? Everyone has losing months. What matters is whether they tell you before you notice.
Local or national?
If someone has to physically come to you, or you serve one city, local SEO will beat national SEO on return every time and cost less doing it. A restaurant, a clinic, an interior designer or a repair service should be spending on Google Business Profile, reviews and location pages, not chasing a nationwide keyword. If you sell software, ship across India, or serve clients remotely, national SEO is the right target and the timeline is longer. We will tell you which one you are during the audit rather than selling you the more expensive option by default.
More questions
Is SEO better than Google Ads?
They solve different problems. Ads buy traffic immediately and stop the moment you stop paying. SEO takes months and then keeps working. Most businesses under a certain size should run ads for cash flow while SEO builds underneath, then let SEO take over the head terms as it matures. Running only one is usually a mistake.
Do I need to publish blog posts every week?
No. Publishing volume for its own sake is one of the most common ways SEO budgets get wasted. One genuinely useful page that answers a question your customers actually ask will outperform ten thin posts written to hit a quota. For most small businesses, fixing the service pages comes before writing anything new at all.
