Short answer: Choose Shopify if you want to launch quickly, sell a standard catalogue and avoid managing hosting, security and updates. Choose WordPress with WooCommerce if you want full control over content, SEO structure and custom features, and you have someone to maintain it. Both can rank well on Google and both work with Indian payment gateways such as Razorpay; the right choice depends on your team, catalogue and plans.

I have built e-commerce stores on both, including stores with Razorpay and PayU payments for small Indian businesses. This comparison is written for owners deciding where to build or rebuild, not for developers.

Side-by-side comparison

Shopify WordPress + WooCommerce
Set-up Fastest: hosted, ready to sell Needs hosting, theme and plugin set-up
Running costs Monthly subscription plus paid apps Hosting, premium plugins and maintenance
Maintenance Handled by Shopify Your responsibility: updates, backups, security
Design flexibility Good within theme limits Very high
Content and blogging Basic blog Best-in-class content management
SEO control Good, with some fixed URL structures Full control over URLs, templates and structured data
Custom features Through apps or custom development Through plugins or custom code
Indian payments Supports Indian gateways such as Razorpay Supports Razorpay, PayU and others through plugins
Ownership Store runs on Shopify’s platform You own the code and data on your own hosting

When Shopify is the better choice

  • You want to be selling within days, not weeks.
  • Nobody in the team wants to manage updates, hosting or security.
  • Your catalogue and checkout are fairly standard.
  • You plan to rely heavily on paid ads and marketplaces rather than content.

When WordPress with WooCommerce is the better choice

  • Content and SEO are a major growth channel: buying guides, category content, blogs.
  • You need custom features, integrations or pricing rules.
  • You want full ownership of the platform and data.
  • You have a developer or a maintenance plan in place.

SEO: which ranks better?

Neither platform ranks by itself. What ranks is a store that Google can crawl cleanly, with category pages that match real searches, unique product descriptions, structured data and fast pages. Shopify stores need care with duplicate collection-product URLs and app bloat. WooCommerce stores need care with filter URLs, plugin weight and hosting quality. Our e-commerce SEO guide covers the fixes for both.

Costs to plan for on either platform

  • Design and set-up, including product upload and payment gateway configuration.
  • Monthly platform or hosting fees, apps or premium plugins.
  • Payment gateway charges per transaction.
  • Ongoing marketing: SEO, ads, email and content.
  • For WooCommerce, maintenance: updates, backups and security. See website maintenance cost in India.

Migrating from one to the other

Moving platforms is possible but needs planning: export products and customers, keep URLs where you can, and set up permanent (301) redirects for every URL that changes so you do not lose rankings. Check Google Search Console for errors in the weeks after launch.

Our recommendation

For a small Indian brand testing demand, Shopify gets you selling fastest. For a brand that wants content-led SEO growth and custom features, WordPress with WooCommerce gives more control. If you are unsure, get a free audit and we will look at your catalogue and goals before recommending either. See our website development service for builds on both.

Frequently asked questions

Is Shopify or WooCommerce cheaper in India?

Shopify has predictable monthly fees plus app costs. WooCommerce can be cheaper to run but needs hosting and maintenance. Compare total cost over a year, including your time.

Can I use Razorpay with Shopify and WooCommerce?

Yes, Razorpay can be connected to both. Check current fees and supported payment methods with the gateway before you launch.

Which is better for SEO?

Both can rank well. WooCommerce offers more control; Shopify needs care with duplicate URLs and apps. Execution matters more than platform.

Can I move from WooCommerce to Shopify later?

Yes. Plan redirects for every changed URL and monitor Search Console after the move to protect rankings.
