Short answer: Google Ads has no fixed price in India. You set a budget, and each click is priced in a live auction against other advertisers bidding on the same searches. What you actually pay depends on your category, your city, how well your ad and landing page match the search, and how many of those clicks turn into enquiries. The useful question is not “what does a click cost” but “what can I afford to pay for a lead”, and that number comes from your own business, not from an industry average.

I get asked some version of “how much should I put into Google Ads?” on almost every first call. This guide walks through how the pricing works, the costs people forget to budget for, and the simple arithmetic I use to set a starting budget for a new account.

How Google decides what a click costs

Every time someone searches, Google runs an auction among the ads eligible to show. Your position and your price depend on your bid and on how relevant and useful Google expects your ad to be. That is why two businesses bidding the same amount can pay very different prices per click.

Google reports a Quality Score for each keyword, built from three things: expected click-through rate, ad relevance and landing page experience. Google is explicit that Quality Score itself is a diagnostic, not an input to the auction, but the signals behind it are the same ones that decide whether you pay more or less than a competitor for the same position.

In practice this means the cheapest way to lower your cost per click is rarely to cut your bid. It is to make the ad answer the search more precisely and to send the click to a page that delivers what the ad promised.

What makes Google Ads expensive in India

Click prices vary widely between categories and cities. The same keyword can cost several times more in Gurugram or Mumbai than in a tier-2 city, simply because more advertisers compete there. The factors that push prices up most often:

  • High customer value categories. Real estate, education admissions, finance, legal and B2B software attract many bidders because a single customer is worth a lot.
  • Broad keywords. “Interior designer” is contested by everyone; “office interior designer Noida sector 62” is not.
  • Loose match types. Broad match without a strong negative keyword list will buy clicks for searches you never intended to pay for.
  • Weak landing pages. Slow pages, generic home pages and forms that ask for too much lower your relevance and raise your effective price.
  • Peak timing. Admission season, festive sales and year-end B2B budgets all raise competition for a few weeks at a time.

Treat any single CPC figure you read online, including ours, with caution. The only reliable benchmark for your business is Google’s Keyword Planner estimate for your exact keywords and locations, followed by two to three weeks of real data.

How your daily budget actually spends

Google Ads budgets are set as an average daily amount, and the platform is allowed to spend unevenly across days. According to Google’s own help documentation, a campaign can spend up to twice its average daily budget on a busy day, but over a month you will not be charged more than 30.4 times the daily budget.

So a ₹1,000 daily budget means roughly ₹30,400 of ad spend per month, not a hard ₹1,000 every day. Plan cash flow around the monthly figure.

The costs people forget to budget for

GST on ad spend

Google Ads billed through Google’s India entity carries 18% GST on the invoice. If your business is GST-registered and you add your GSTIN to the Google Ads billing profile, that GST is generally available as input tax credit. Speak to your accountant about your specific set-up; the point here is simply that ₹50,000 of ad spend is not a ₹50,000 cash outflow.

Management fees

If an agency or freelancer runs the account, their fee sits on top of the spend. Common models are a flat monthly retainer, a percentage of ad spend, or a mix. A flat fee is easier to plan for and removes the incentive to push your spend up. For reference, our own Google Ads management is a flat monthly fee, with the ad spend paid directly to Google from your own account.

Landing pages and tracking

Many accounts lose money before the first click because conversion tracking is missing or the landing page is the home page. Budget time, and sometimes money, for a proper landing page and for tracking calls, WhatsApp clicks and form submissions.

Work backwards from what a lead is worth

The budget question becomes much easier once you know the most you can pay for one enquiry and still make money. Here is the calculation I run with every new client. The numbers below are an example only, not a benchmark.

Question Example
Average gross profit from one customer ₹20,000
How many enquiries become customers? 1 in 4
Maximum you can pay per enquiry to break even ₹5,000
Target cost per enquiry (leaving margin) ₹2,500
Average cost per click in your category (from Keyword Planner) ₹30
Landing page conversion rate 5% (1 enquiry per 20 clicks)
Expected cost per enquiry ₹600

In this example the maths works comfortably. If your expected cost per enquiry comes out above your break-even figure, more budget will not fix it. You need a better offer, a better landing page, tighter keywords, or a different channel.

To decide the monthly budget, multiply the number of enquiries you want by the expected cost per enquiry, then allow the first month to be partly a learning month.

How to start with a small budget without wasting it

  1. Start with one Search campaign. Performance Max and Display can work later, but Search on high-intent keywords is the clearest way to learn what converts.
  2. Use exact and phrase match first. Add broad match only once you have conversion data and a solid negative keyword list.
  3. Tighten location. If you serve Noida and Greater Noida, do not target all of Delhi NCR by default. Set location to “presence”, not “interest”.
  4. Schedule for when you can answer. If nobody picks up the phone after 8 pm, do not pay for calls after 8 pm.
  5. Track every lead type. Forms, calls from ads, calls from the website and WhatsApp clicks should all be recorded as conversions.
  6. Review search terms weekly. The search terms report is where wasted spend hides.
  7. Send each ad group to a matching page. A page about the exact service converts far better than the home page.

When Google Ads is the wrong channel

Google Ads works best when people already search for what you sell. If your product creates demand rather than capturing it, such as a new D2C brand or an event, social advertising often produces cheaper first-time customers. We compare the two in detail in Google Ads vs Meta Ads in India, and break down Facebook and Instagram pricing in Meta Ads cost in India.

For categories where clicks are consistently expensive, it is also worth building organic visibility alongside paid search so you are not renting every lead. See our SEO services for how that works.

How we run Google Ads accounts

At Digital Marketing By OG, accounts are set up and run by Yatin Chaudhary, who has managed Search, Display, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns for brands selling in India, the US and the UK. We start with tracking and landing pages, set budgets from your lead value rather than a package price, and report on cost per enquiry rather than clicks.

Want a second opinion on your current account? Request a free Google Ads audit and we will show you where the budget is leaking, even if you decide to keep running it yourself.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum budget for Google Ads in India?

Google does not set a meaningful minimum. The practical minimum is the budget that buys enough clicks each month to generate a handful of enquiries, so you can tell what is working. Work it out from your expected cost per click and conversion rate rather than picking a round number.

Do I pay GST on Google Ads in India?

Yes. Google’s India invoices include 18% GST. GST-registered businesses that add their GSTIN to the billing profile can usually claim it as input tax credit; confirm the treatment with your accountant.

Why is my cost per click higher than my competitor’s?

Price in the auction depends on relevance as well as bid. Better ad-to-keyword match, higher expected click-through rate and a more useful landing page all lower what you pay for the same position.

How long before Google Ads starts producing leads?

A well-built Search campaign can produce enquiries in the first week. Expect the first three to four weeks to be a learning period in which you cut wasted keywords and improve the landing page.

Is it better to pay an agency a percentage of spend or a flat fee?

A flat fee is easier to budget and does not reward higher spend. A percentage can make sense for very large accounts. Whatever the model, make sure the ad account is in your name and you keep full access.
