Short answer: A Cashify-style marketplace lets people sell their used phones online at an instant quoted price, and lets other customers buy checked, refurbished devices. To build one in India you need four things working together: a device valuation engine, a pickup and inspection workflow, a storefront for refurbished stock, and back-office tools for inventory, billing and compliance. The website is the easy part; the rules behind the price and the inspection are what make the business work.

We have built a Cashify-style marketplace for pre-owned phones, as well as GST billing software used in retail. This guide explains what a platform like this needs, in the order we would plan it, for mobile retailers, refurbishers and entrepreneurs considering the recommerce model.

How the Cashify-style model works

  1. Seller gets a quote. The customer picks brand, model and variant, answers questions about condition, and sees an instant price.
  2. Pickup or drop-off. They book a pickup slot or visit a store.
  3. Inspection and final price. A technician checks the device against the answers given. The price is confirmed or revised.
  4. Payment. The seller is paid by UPI or bank transfer once the device is accepted.
  5. Refurbish and resell. The device is data-wiped, graded, repaired if needed and listed for sale with a warranty.

Core features to plan

Seller features

  • Model selector with variants (storage, colour) and a condition questionnaire.
  • Instant quote with a clear explanation of what could change the final price.
  • Pickup scheduling by pincode, with SMS or WhatsApp updates.
  • Simple KYC and payout details at handover.

Buyer features

  • Refurbished catalogue with honest grading (for example, like new, good, fair), real photos and battery health where available.
  • Warranty and return terms shown clearly on every product page.
  • Payments through Indian gateways such as Razorpay or PayU, and cash on delivery if you choose to offer it.

Admin tools for your team

  • Pricing admin: base prices per model and deductions per condition answer, updated as market prices move.
  • Inspection app for technicians, including IMEI capture and a checklist.
  • Inventory by IMEI, grade and location, linked to GST-ready billing.
  • Order, pickup and payout tracking with reports.

The valuation engine is the business

The quote customers see must be competitive enough to win the device and safe enough to leave margin after inspection, refurbishment and resale. Keep pricing rules in an admin panel rather than in code, so your team can update prices daily. Track how often final prices differ from quotes: a large gap frustrates sellers and signals your questions are not capturing condition well.

Trust and compliance checks

  • Lost or blocked devices. Check each IMEI before buying. The Department of Telecommunications’ Sanchar Saathi CEIR portal provides IMEI verification for devices reported lost.
  • Data wiping. Reset and verify every device before resale, and tell sellers how their data is handled.
  • Personal data. KYC and payout details are personal data. India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 and its 2025 rules expect clear notice, consent for the stated purpose and reasonable security safeguards.
  • E-commerce disclosures. The Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020 require online sellers to display information such as seller details, return and refund policies and grievance redressal contacts. Take legal advice for your specific set-up.
  • Tax. Confirm GST treatment of used goods and refurbished sales with your accountant and set up billing accordingly.

Build options: off-the-shelf vs custom

Approach Good for Watch out for
WooCommerce or Shopify storefront plus add-ons Selling refurbished stock quickly Quote engine and pickup workflow usually need custom work
Custom platform Full buy-and-sell model with valuation, inspection and payouts Higher build cost; needs a clear scope and ongoing maintenance
Hybrid Custom quote and back office, standard storefront Keep data in sync between systems

For the storefront decision, see WooCommerce vs Shopify for Indian stores; for build budgets, see website development cost in India.

Getting customers

  • Search. Model-specific pages (“sell iPhone 13 in Noida”, “refurbished Samsung S23”) capture high-intent searches. Our e-commerce SEO guide covers how to structure them.
  • Google Business Profile for each real store location where customers can drop off devices.
  • Meta and Google Ads for sell-side campaigns; track cost per accepted device, not cost per quote. See Google Ads cost in India.
  • WhatsApp follow-up for quotes that were not completed.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to build a website like Cashify?

It depends on scope. A storefront for refurbished phones costs far less than a full platform with a valuation engine, pickup scheduling, inspection app and payouts. Write down the features you need first, then get quotes against that list.

How long does it take to build a recommerce marketplace?

A storefront can launch in weeks. A full buy-and-sell platform usually takes a few months, including testing the pricing rules with real devices.

How do I check if a used phone is blocked?

Use the IMEI verification on the government’s Sanchar Saathi CEIR portal before buying any device.

Can I start with only selling refurbished phones?

Yes. Many businesses start with a storefront for refurbished stock and add the online buy-back flow once operations are ready.
